Q.  The position of parentheses is different in MathML when parentheses are enclosed with the mtext element and when parentheses are enclosed with the mo element. Is it the specification? [No.2005012102]
A.

Yes. It is the specification. For instance, you describe the MathML code as follows.

<mtext>(-X)</mtext>
<mo>(</mo><mrow><mo>-</mo><mi>X</mi></mrow><mo>)</mo>

XSL Formatter matches the center of parentheses enclosed by the mo element to the axis which is the same height of the minus sign in general. Even when parentheses with different size become nested, the center of parentheses comes to be the same height by this processing. However, this processing is not done for the mtext element because XSL Formatter treats the whole enclosed by the mtext element as a character string. Consequently, the expression of the position of parentheses is different.
