This session is a guided tour of some of the accessibility features of DITA, HTML, WCAG, and PDF/UA and how to style content to make it more accessible. The focus will be on file formats rather than User Agent behavior, since the information needed to make accessible HTML or PDF usually needs to be included in, or able to be inferred from, the source XML.

Accessibility Matters

XML, by itself, does not have any support for accessibility. XML is extremely flexible, but it needs to flex in the right directions if it is going to support the information necessary to make a document accessible. DITA includes some accessibility features, including some that are unique to DITA. In this webinar, Tony will guide you through of some of the features of the DITA, HTML, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and PDF/UA (Universal Accessibility) standards. We will focus more on file formats rather than User Agent behavior, since the information needed to make accessible HTML or PDF usually needs to be included in, or able to be inferred from, the source XML.

However, it’s rarely the raw XML that is presented to users. This webinar will also stray into some aspects of styling the content to make it more accessible.

CSS or XSL-FO: Which should I use for producing print publications?

In this webinar, you will learn about the two recognized international standards available to address the fully automated formatting of pages and publications for PDF and print: CSS and XSL-FO.  We will explore the two standards and address:

• When you should use automated document formatting versus desktop publishing
• The motivations for and benefits of automated document formatting
• The challenges
• Where CSS and XSL-FO fit within solutions for the overall delivery of formatted pages and publications

We will also discuss some of the resources available and show a range of familiar publications produced using CSS and XSL-FO.

About the Speaker
Michael Miller is Vice President of Antenna House, Inc., a company that has developed one of the leading standards‐based (XSL‐FO and CSS) document formatting software products on the market today. Michael has a degree in Printing Engineering and Management and has been involved in high‐end composition, document formatting, and document management for over 40 years. He has an extensive background with structured data, including SGML, XML, S1000D, and DITA. During his career he has worked in Europe and North America and has been involved in the implementations of some of the largest fully‐automated publishing and document formatting projects.

CMS/DITA North America 2018

Antenna House exhibited and presented at CMS/DITA North America in Denver, Colorado. This year marked the 20th annual conference hosted by the Center for Information-Development Management (CIDM) and was filled with valuable information on DITA over the course of three days. This conference offered multiple concurrent sessions with hot topics focusing on DITA reuse, publishing, content strategy, and artificial intelligence. Along with the sessions, there was a DITA clinic, where experts answered questions and helped solve issues with the DITA standard. Attendees could also get hands-on experience in the Technology Test Kitchen, where they could follow along as a presenter demonstrates how to use a new DITA tool or software.

We presented in the Technology Test Kitchen this year with a demonstration on how to format multiple languages in a single DITA document using the Antenna House PDF5-ML plugin for DITA Open Toolkit. The PDF5-ML plugin is designed to work with AH Formatter making it easier to use, simple to modify and maintain, and more powerful than the default PDF plugin that the DITA Open Toolkit provides. Participants showed great interest in the PDF5-ML plugin and got to experience for themselves how quick and easy it is to modify a multilingual document and generating a PDF output.
