New Features in Office Server Document Converter V7.2

December 3, 2020

PDF 2.0 Support

V7.2 has added support for the input and output of PDF 2.0. When outputting PDF 2.0, specify the PDF version in the PDF output parameter:

 -pdfver PDF2.0

When converting from PDF to PDF, if the major version of the output PDF and the original PDF are different, the conversion will not be successful. Example: PDF 1.x cannot be converted to PDF 2.0

You can view PDF 2.0 with Adobe Acrobat (Reader) 10.0 or later.

DocuWorks (.xdw) Support

V7.2 has added support for DocuWorks version V4/V5/V6/V7/V8. It supports the conversion of DocuWorks file (.xdw) created by importing the document files such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, image files and text files.

Since OSDC targets imported/attached documents in the DocuWorks file (.xdw), an error will occur if the document does not exist in the DocuWorks file.

Restrictions for the file conversion:

  • DocuWorks binder documents (extension: xbd) and DocuWorks containers (extension: xct) are not supported
  • A file with security set will result in an error
  • A signed file will be treated as a security setting and result in an error
  • A temporary file is generated during the conversion

Improved Reproducibility of Excel Files

The layout reproducibility has been improved by changing the specifications of "equal allocation" and "justification" in the cell (specifications of OSDC V7.2 or later).

1. Improved the "justify" for the horizontal positions -

  • Original document displayed in Excel 2019:

Example of how a document displays in Excel 2019

  • Conversion result of OSDC V7.2 R1:

  • Conversion result of OSDC V7.1 MR3:

Compare the conversion result of V7.2 and V7.1 with the original Excel file. Images are outputted with Windows OS.

  • Horizontal: Justify, Vertical: Center
  • In V7.1, the line ends are not aligned and uneven.
  • In V7.2, the character spacing is adjusted to reproduce the justification.
  • Line feed and line spacing are slightly different from Excel.

2. Improved reproducibility of the cell height/width

Improved Reproducibility of Word Files

Improved the reproducibility of the layout by changing the following specifications.

1. Improved the reproducibility of the start and end reference position of the vertical border for the Word conversion.

  • Original document displayed in Word 2019:

Example of original MS Word document
  • Conversion result of OSDC V7.2 R1:

Example of converted PDF result using Office Server Document Converter V7.2
  • Conversion result of OSDC V7.1 MR3:
Example of converted PDF result using Office Server Document Converter V7.1 MR3

Compare the conversion result of V7.2 and V7.1 with the original Word document.

  • In V7.1, borders are offset to the right starting from the left end. However in V7.2, the borders are distributed left and right starting from the center.
  • This also applies to the left and right end of the cells, anywhere in the table.
  • In V7.2, the start and end reference position of the border is same as the original document in Word 2019. (The reproducibility of the borders will be an issue for the future improvement.)

2. Improved the reproducibility of the start position of text in the cell for the Word conversion.

  • Original document displayed in Word 2019

    Example of original Word document
  • Conversion result of OSDC V7.2 R1:
Example of converted PDF result using Office Server Converter V7.2
  • Conversion result of OSDC V7.1 MR3:

Example of converted PDF result using Office Server Document Converter V7.1 MR3
  • In V7.1, the text in the cell is starting from the right end of the borders. However, in V7.2 the text is starting from the center of the borders.
  • In V7.1, the text starts from the right end of the border, therefore the start positions of the text shift to the right according to the thickness of the border. However, in V7.2 the text starts from the center of the border, therefore there is no change to the starting position of the text as long as the characters do not overlap the border.
  • When there is a margin in the cell, in V7.1, a margin also starts from the right end of the border. However, in V7.2 a margin starts from the center of the border.
  • In Word 2019, a margin starts from the center of the border, therefore the conversion result of v7.2 is same as the original document in MS Word.

3. Made changes to get the font height from the metrics information of the font file, that was previously the line height for each font type that the Word conversion program had as a fixed value.
